MODULE 3 - GENERAL MACHINE SHOP SUPPORT EQUIPMENT AND TECHNIQUES

The third and final installment of our Machine Shop Course builds on the knowledge you have acquired from the Lathe & Mill Courses. You will learn many new techniques (tricks that even some experienced machinists dont know), saving you years of frustration, trial and error.  In Machine Shop 3, Darrell Holland will take you through all the support equipment that you need to have in your shop. Hell teach you what to look for when purchasing equipment and show you how to set-up and get the best performance out of each machine.  You will learn:  How to set-up and use an engraving machine for lettering, tooling, barrels, etc. How to sharpen drills & end mills (this will save you lots of money!). Making a Bearing Scraper. Removing broken screws (these tricks will help you out of a jam). Understanding the Rockwell Hardness Scale. Heat Treating Furnaces and their uses. Also, Darrell goes through all the details of setting up your shop. He shares numerous time and money saving ideas, showing you the How and Why of setting up your shop for maximum efficiency.  All the above would be equal to what you MIGHT learn in a semester of machine shop at the college level and are certainly worth investing in the course. But theres much, much more. The Surface Grinder:  Darrell takes you through complete setup, all controls and features, how to true the wheel before cutting and performs a complete surfacing operation. Most people have never even seen these machines before and he leaves you understanding how to use them.  The Blast Cabinet:  Not only does Darrell cover the basic operation and techniques, he shows you special techniques that make the expensive components of the system last longer AND help you blast your parts fast.  The Belt Sander:  This section shows many special techniques.  This IS the most important support tool you can own and Darrell tells you why and covers everything you need to know to use it correctly and to its best advantage.  You will know more uses for a belt sander than they ever thought possible AND exactly how to do them.   Using the Drill Press:  Ive used one for years, and still learned some new ideas (you know how thorough Darrell is!)  He shows many tips and tricks, including simple ways to setup for drilling multiple parts quickly AND accurately, as well as easy ways to prevent accidents from happening.   Removing Broken Screws:  Darrell shows several methods for not only removing broken screws but also broken taps.  He doesnt just tell you how to do it, he actually does it.    The Horizontal Band Saw:  He showed it in the Lathe course, but here Darrell takes the time to demonstrate numerous techniques for holding odd shaped parts and for getting more accurate cuts.  He also shows you how to use this versatile machine as a vertical bandsaw.  Heat Treating:  He not only covers the furnaces, but also how to heat-treat, the differences between oil & air hardening and how to get advice & tips from professional heat-treating companies, for free! Shop Set-up:  Darrell goes through all the details of setting up your shop, I mean everything!!  Power, lighting, ventilation, fire extinguishers, equipment placement, work bench placement, air system routing, how to set up your dirty room and raw stock storage, you name it, he covers it.  >BONUS VIDEO #1:  Boring Engine Cylinders:  This video covers EVERY part of the process from measuring and calculations, choosing correct oversize pistons, on through boring bar setup, the actual boring and honing to finished size. Its a VERY thorough course!  After you watch this video, you will know how to do it right!  BONUS VIDEO #2:  Automotive Brake Lathe Course:  Shows every step in detail and gives loads of tips picked up from years of experience.  Youll be able to walk up to a brake lathe and begin turning rotors/drums immediately, after watching this course.  >BONUS VIDEO #3:  Latest Technologies Video of The International MACHINE TOOL SHOW!  It is so cool to see these state-of-the-art computer controlled machines going through their paces and to listen to the factory reps answering questions!  You will be exposed to all the latest equipment and techniques being used in machining, including laser,  EDM and water jet technology!  Become AGI Certified As A Machinist: Included with The General Machine Shop 3, are the written materials, steel and aluminum needed for you to receive AGI Machine Shop Certification.  Certification consists of two tests. The first test is a multiple-choice exam on Machine Shop Theory.  The test is developed from the material covered in all the Machine Shop Course videos; Lathe, Mill and General Machine Shop.  Upon passing you will receive a personalized Certificate in Machine Shop Theory.  The second test is a Practical Applications test. We include the raw stock and blueprints required for you to turn two Test bars like Darrell made in the Lathe Course. The Test bars will be returned to AGI for grading fit & finish. You will also receive the material to make the  test block from the Mill course. You can use your video course as a step-by-step guide.  Upon successful completion of both projects you will receive your personalized, Machinist, Practical Applications certificate.  This is a true test of your knowledge and skill, enabling you to get a job in a machine shop if you wanted one.  There is no time limit in which to complete either testing section. (NOTE: Testing & Certification is NOT currently offered in California pending course approval. All California students will receive testing after course is State approved).   After taking the complete Machine Shop Course, you will be able to walk into any machine shop and talk with total confidence & intelligence about almost all aspects of General Machine Shop.
