National Arms Museum of Argentina

Posted by Gene on 11 Aug 2008 | Tagged as: Genes Corner

Another quick update from Buenos Aires, Argentina as Gene Kelly and AGI go around the world looking for interesting information about firearms for you, our Inner Circle Members.

I found an excellent Arms Museum in Buenos Aires. It’s the official National Arms Museum of Argentina and it has a wide range of firearms, swords, bayonets, and light cannons.

I spent quite a bit of time there over two days. First, getting permission to film video and then again to shoot video to bring you a fairly extensive overview of the collect.

Argentina went through a number of wars with its neighboring countries over the last 100-plus years and had military dictatorships for much of its existence. As a result, the Argentina Military and Police purchased numerous firearms over the years. They also designed and manufactured a number of firearms. A few designs such as the FN-FAL they manufactured under license in Argentina. The government sponsored factory still manufactures a clone of the Browning Hi-power.

The result of all this is that Argentina has a wide variety of firearms on display, selected from the various models used through the last Century and a Half. For a smaller museum it has a very interesting collection and includes some guns and variations that I had never seen before.

I believe that our shooting video in the museum for outside viewing was a first. The Curator was out of the country so we were not able to have him take the guns out of the cases, but we still got some excellent video that you should find interesting and we will be adding it to an upcoming issue of GunTech.

Next I will be going to the BERSA Arms Factory for a private tour and filming of how they manufacture their pistols, so be watching for an update on that.

Gene’s visit to Buenos Aires!

Posted by Gene on 04 Aug 2008 | Tagged as: Genes Corner

We made it to Buenos Aires Argentina after a couple of very long flights.
It’s never short, as is a long way from Napa, California. USA!! (I traveled to Cordoba Argentina a few years ago to go Dove Hunting (that’s another story)). This time we flew from San Francisco to Miami FL. to Buenos Aires. Total elapsed time from leaving the house to touch down in Buenos Aires was about 18 hours of travel.

Getting through customs was easy, but we had a mix-up with the driver who was going to pick us up. He was waiting at the normal foreign arrival point Terminal “A”, but because our plane was late they rerouted us to terminal “B”. He knew when we were to arrive but didn’t know our exact flight number or what we looked like. About ½ through our phone conversation trying to figure out where we both were at, his cell phone died.  Well we stayed put and eventually found each other. The person who picked us up was Robert, the apartment rental company manager. Fortunately he spoke excellent English as he grew up in southern California. On the way to the apartment he educated us on many parts of the city and most importantly the best restaurants around our neighborhood. (Palermo Las Canitas).

To get more of the feel of what it would be like to live in Buenos Aires, I had decided to rent an apartment. I had my assistant Holly check online to find a number of options. Then I went on Craigslist.com and found this apartment. It is a newer two bedroom, bath and a half apartment. It’s really quite nice with everything we need. It’s on the 4th floor and the way the building is set up you have a security door at the front entrance to the building. Then you have a private elevator shared by all the two bedroom apartments in the front of the ten story building. The back of the building is comprised of two one bedroom apartments on each floor and they have an elevator servicing them. Therefore you are seldom waiting for an elevator.  Which is really nice because I am not a patient guy. The apartment itself has a high security door with a steel frame door and over a dozen deadbolts just like a safe. I doubt that a SWAT team could get through that door short of using explosives. I definitely feel secure.

However right below us is a Major Street and the traffic is LOUD, 24 hours a day. Coming from a Suburban neighborhood, it is REALLY DIFFICULT to Sleep!! But hopefully we will soon get used to it…..

We arrived at the apartment on Friday August 1st, mid-day. Basically we hung out at the apartment (I took a short nap) until dinner (supper for some of you). Here they eat really late. The restaurants open between 8pm and 9pm. At that time they are almost empty even on a Friday night. But from 10 to midnight and beyond they are booming. After walking around the neighborhood for a while, We decided to go for it and eat at what we were told was one of the best steak restaurants in our area, the CampoBravo. It is!

The three of us had Ribeye Steaks and trimmings with wine and sodas for a total bill of $147 pesos. That’s less then $50. Which is pretty good when you consider that where I live it would been about $50 EACH or More for the same thing!

Saturday we slept in, (we only got an hour or two of sleep on the plane). Then we took a cab to a tourist agency I had found. The main one we were suppose to use answered the phone but they didn’t have anyone that spoke English and my Spanish will only get me a bathroom and a cold beer if I am lucky. So it was frustrating. And the second agency I got a hold of only had one part of their phone message in English. Which basically total us to press 2 For English. Just kidding. But it was all in Spanish except for the last part in English that said hold for an operator.

Well, no one answered. But because I am a “Message to Garcia” kind of guy (if that reference means nothing to you get the book “The Ultimate Success Secret” written by Dan Kennedy and myself. It’s part of our “Professional Gunsmithing Course Business Success package” But if you contact us at 1-800-797-0867 and request it, I will send it to you for just $10. I hate to give it away but part of the message is that you Don’t Quit. And I don’t!!) I started punching buttons until I got a hold of someone and they found someone who could speak English for me. So we got a tour in. Actually I recommend the company www.Tangol.com

We took a City Tour through them and I lined up a couple of more that I will be telling you about. Whenever I go to a new city whether it is in the USA or abroad, I always try and get a city tour my first or second day there. It’s always worth the money as it enables me to understand the “Lay of the land” and to note the various places that I want to go back and see.

I will never forget being in Rome, Italy for the first time and finding out on the Tour that the day before I had walked by the Pantheon and didn’t even know it. What a bummer it would have been to have missed it. So again I recommend you include a city tour as part of your first day or two on the ground anywhere in the world.

Anyway if you don’t do so, make sure you take a city tour each time you land in an unfamiliar place. Hey some of them are Hokey, but overall you will get some good intel.

So that evening we went to an Italian Restaurant. A large immigrant portion of the population before and after the turn of the 19th Century were Italians and the influence here is strong. The food again was excellent. This time the staff spoke very little English. To order I told the waiter to pick for me the “Muy Bueno” pasta dish and wine. I was very pleased with his choices! The pasta was excellent and the wine, a fine red Malbec by Alamos by the Catenas Family. It was about $11 a bottle. An equivalent wine would have been $40 or more in California.

I neglected to mention that the exchange rate is about 3.1 Argentine Pesos to one Dollar. We are very fortunate that for now, the dollar still has a great deal of value around the world.  The minimum wage here is 700 pesos (233 dollars more or less). The average wage of the middle class is about 2,000 to 3,000 pesos. Less than $1,000 a month.

Today we went Walking through the San Telmo district which is famous for Tango and we saw some street performances. Tomorrow night we are going to see a professional Tango show with dinner. It wouldn’t seem right to come to Buenos Aires and not see Tango!!

In the street markets, Jacob bought four miniature lead soldiers two that were British replicas from the Falkland war, one with a Sterling SMG (a favorite of mine) and one with a Bren Gun. The other two were from the other side of the same war, Argentine Royal Marines (one with a FAL and the other with a Belt Fed MAG). They are very detailed and Jacob is adding them to his lead solider collection. (If any of you know where to get lead solider molds, let me know).

To get there in the first place we took the underground (subway) to the Plaza De Mayo in the center of Buenos Aires and then walked about ten blocks down Defensa Street which is blocked off and full of street vendors. I purchased a hand made Chess Set, with one side being “Tango” and the other side “Gauchos” for $24. Jake and I played a game while waiting for over 40 minutes to have our order taken in a restaurant. This was a first because up until this point the service has been excellent and the people VERY friendly. After getting a cab ride back to JUMBO ( a very large super market the size of a Big Walmart) we picked up some food for the apartment. We walked back to the apartment and cooked up some vegetables to go with our yummy left-overs from the last two nights.

Going through a foreign Grocery store is really an experience. Particularly when you don’t speak the language. Everything looks different and is packaged differently. For example Milk (Leche) is packaged in box cartons and Bags. Weird, I had to look around for quite a while to find it. The funniest thing I purchased was my Coffee. (Got to have it!!!) – I purchased a bag of “Yerba Mate, Caf©”. I thought it was Coffee. WRONG! It is an Herbal Tea of sorts that has all kinds of supposed benefits and definitely an acquired taste (I tried it.) BUT it is definitely NOT Coffee. And I asked before I purchased. So much for my communication skills….

That was at the local market at the base of our apartment. At the JUMBO I double checked and got ground coffee for a drip maker. I will let you know if it really is the right stuff in the Morning! All for now.

Good night from Buenos Aires!!

Century International Arms:

Posted by Gene on 28 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Genes Corner

I just got a call from Kelly the HR director at Century International Arms thanking us for posting their ad about needing more Qualified AGI Gunsmiths. She said the response has been great and the quality of applicant excellent. But of course we KNEW THAT because our students are the cream of the crop.

As you may recall Century manufactures or remanufactures a number of different rifles such as a Galili Clone, a G-3, the FN-FAL, M1 Garands and others with more to come. They also import many guns that sell at reasonable prices but with above average quality. Good value for the money guns for John Q Public.  They are still expanding and looking for even more Gunsmiths so if you are an AGI Certified Gunsmith you would have the inside track and may want to apply.

What’s new at the 2008 SHOT Show

Posted by Gene on 08 Feb 2008 | Tagged as: Genes Corner

What’s Was New at the 2008 SHOT Show

The SHOT Show is always an amazing place for companies and individuals in the Firearms industry to meet. This year was certainly no exception. The show was attended by over 45,000 people and had over 715,000 square feet of exhibit space. (more than 16 acres of guns and accessories.) Just about everybody who is anybody in this industry was there. All showing their latest wares and ideas. We interview on video several dozen  manufacturers and suppliers that we felt had new, different or innovative ideas. You will see it all in up coming issues of GunTech DVD Magazine.  However here is a brief overview and a sneak peek:

Bob Landis an old friend in the industry and owner of Ohio Ordnance Works Inc, showed us his new BATFE approved 240B SLR (Self Loading Rifle) – a semi auto version of the Mag 58 or U.S. 240  Medium belt fed Machinegun at $13,500 each this certainly is a Big Boy Toy.

Ron Norton of Chiappa Firearms (The Italian maker of numerous collector grade replica long guns, such as the Spencer, Winchester 1887, Sharps rifle and others, showed us his latest models. (The mini sharps is really sweet!) and invited us to go to Italy to film at the factory (we hope to do that in the fall). We will show you about 6 different models in issues of GunTech.

X-Caliber Tactical – Brings a whole new dimension to Air Soft including less-lethal air guns for crowd control and law enforcement use. You’ll love seeing these guns. Including a Mini Gun that shoots 6mm air soft pellets or steel BB’s !! at several thousand rounds per minute.

We found a manufacturer of a new AR Drum magazine that holds 150 rounds and doesn’t need special lubrication. We will test this in up coming issues of GunTech.

Also we found an exciting  conversion for your AR-15 gas system that will give you AK-47 style gas piston reliability without permanent modification to the rifle. They also claim the gun can now go for several thousand rounds without requiring cleaning. You know that we will put that claim to the test– Details in GunTech.

How about a Multi-Caliber AR-15 that can be converted from .223 to 7.62×39 to .308 to 9mm all with one Serial Number!! This kind of flexibility might come  in real handy in the future.

We reviewed several training devices including a Electronic Shocking Knife (you have got to see this!) Trust me – You won’t want to get “cut” with this.

Stephen Sanetti, president of Ruger showed us the latest in the Ruger product line including a slick little pocket .380 pistol and a pistol version of the 10/22. –

We also reviewed several new Gunsmithing tools and looked at an innovative but very controversial new cartridge.  We will be packing the next two issues of GunTech with all of these SHOT Show interviews and a lot more, so be looking for your issues in the Mail.

I will give you more from the 2008 Show in my next up date.

Jeanne Assam - Herorine receives Award from 2nd Amendment Foundation.

Posted by Gene on 19 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Genes Corner

NEWS RELEASE SAF HONORS COLORADO’S JEANNE ASSAM WITH ELEANOR
ROOSEVELT AWARDBELLEVUE, WA – For her remarkable display of heroism
and courage under fire, the Second Amendment Foundation announced today
that it will recognize Jeanne Assam, who confronted a gunman on Dec. 9
at the New Life Church shooting in Colorado Springs, with the Eleanor
Roosevelt Award.

The Roosevelt award was created by SAF founder Alan Gottlieb, co-author
of America Fights Back: Armed Self-Defense in a Violent Age. The award
honors exceptional women who use firearms in self-defense and the
defense of others. The award is named in memory of former First Lady
Eleanor Roosevelt, who frequently carried a revolver for personal
protection, even while she lived in the White House, and during the
times that she campaigned in the South for civil rights.

“Jeanne Assam, an armed private citizen who volunteered to provide
security at the New Life Church, was suddenly faced with a deadly
emergency and without hesitation, disregarding her own safety, she rose
to that challenge,” Gottlieb said. “By confronting a killer,
Assam undoubtedly saved many lives.

“The news media, perhaps to try diminishing Ms. Assam’s bravery
and the significance of her intervention, have revealed her dismissal as
a Minneapolis police officer several years ago,” he added. “We
concur with church Senior Pastor Brady Boyd, who observed that all of us
have past experiences we may regret, and that she should not be
`convicted or crucified for being a heroine.’ Today, the entire
nation should be proud of Jeanne Assam, and grateful that her life’s
path led from Minneapolis to Colorado Springs.

“Jeanne Assam did an incredibly brave thing under circumstances that
could easily be described as above and beyond the call,” Gottlieb
stated. “Every day in this country, armed private citizens defend
themselves or others, frequently preventing or stopping crimes. Their
actions go largely unrecognized and more frequently ignored by the press
and public officials who would rather suppress the notion that Americans
can fight back.

“We created the Eleanor Roosevelt Award to recognize the efforts of
armed women who practice personal safety,” Gottlieb concluded.
“In Jeanne Assam’s case, we are honoring a truly remarkable
woman who placed herself in harm’s way for the safety of others. We
are humbled by her good and noble deed

Run To the Gun Fire & DO SOMETHING!!

Posted by Gene on 12 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: In the News

Recently there have been a number of shootings around the country where an individual has just indiscriminately opened fired on a group of people, randomly shooting and killing.  The most recent, reported over the weekend, was at a Church in

Colorado Springs, CO.

What was different about this situation was how it ended. It is reported that Jeanne Assam a church member who had a pistol and a concealed weapons permit, (CCW), heard the shots, she ran to the sound of the gun fire and stopped the attack by shooting and killing the attacker. Most likely she saved dozens of lives.

In spite of the tragedy of lives lost and the after action trauma this woman will most likely face, there is some small good that can come out of this awful situation and that is this; because of this brave woman’s example we have an opportunity to Re-train at least some of the American population about How to react in a situation like this and how NOT to simply be Victims.

I have spent much of the last 27 years as a Professional Security Consultant, Bodyguard, Firearms Instructor and served a brief stint in law enforcement. Much of my training came from

Israel where a totally different mind set is prevalent. There, in the face of an attack you are trained to DO SOMETHING.  Often Anything is better then nothing.

Almost all of the recent attacks have been perpetrated by a single gunman. And, while the thought of attacking a shooter while unarmed is daunting, it may be the only road to survival.

I won’t pretend that I understand what is going on in the mind of these sick people. It is unfathomable to me to take innocent lives for absolutely no reason other than some sort of self-hatred. But, under extreme stress most people, including these violent individuals, experience “tunnel vision” which limits their focus down to what is happening immediately in front of them and reduces their peripheral vision. You can use this to your advantage by attacking the shooter at an angle or from the back or side. But you HAVE to attack. Throw things, run and tackle the shooter and keep on fighting.

But what happens if I get shot? There have been hundreds, even thousands of police related shootings where the bad guy was hit multiple times and didn’t immediately stop, go down or die. Often these people have survived an incredible number of gun shot wounds from trained professionals and have later walked into court unassisted. By attacking a shooter you may very well be severely wounded, possibly even critically and you might die later. But unless you are hit in one of a very few small, vital, and instantly disabling places on your body (brain, heart), you will be able to continue to fight for 30 seconds to a minute or more. In that amount of time you can quite possibly stop the attack.

What is the alternative? Run and be shot in the back or cower and be executed? By all means, if you have a second to take hard cover you may do so in order to quickly assess the situation, but Then you have to ACT FAST. To be in motion is to stay in motion. So it is better to be moving and attack.

In reality it is very hard for an untrained gunman to hit a moving target, especially one coming toward him with projected force. It’s almost impossible to consistently hit multiple targets that are swarming a shooter (we have demonstrated this time and time again in training). So IF we could change the mind set of Americans, so that they decide that they will Not allow themselves to be Victims, but rather will Fight in a situation like this, you might find that you are not alone in your response. It is very unlikely that he could stop all of you.

There is the possibility to attack with greater safety when a shooter has to reload, or when there is a jam or malfunction. But in reality you can not wait for these opportunities if you want to live and protect the lives of others. You must act and change the balance of control.

When attacking if possible throw objects at the attacker which can distract them and upset their perception of control and balance. This may fluster them thus slowing down the momentum of the attack and potentially saving lives. Again the point is DO SOMETHING.

Note: This morning, AFTER I wrote the above statements, it was revealed today that another UN-ARMED worshiper at the church in

Colorado, named Larry Bourbannais, also confronted the attacker. First he ran to where he heard the gunshots coming from, he took quick cover to assess the situation, and then ran toward the shooter yelling “You Coward!!” – he locked eyes with the shooter and was shot at multiple times, being hit only with bullet fragments in the arm. There is no doubt in my mind that this guy has “immense courage”, and he is also a Vietnam Vet. But most telling is the fact that he had already made a DECISION of what he would do if ever in this type of situation. He is reported as saying “ I promised myself after Columbine, and told my four daughters, that if something like that ever happened and I was there, I would go after the shooter, because you want to protect people” The 59 year old Bourbannis told TODAY co-host Meredith Vieira.

That is when you have to attack without a weapon. However, it is far better to respond to a shooting by shooting. A well placed bullet can travel the distance between you and the attacker in a fraction of a second. Thankfully the number of licensed concealed weapons permits held by private citizens like Jeanne Assam is climbing across the country, particularly in States that recognize the advantage of armed, responsible individuals. We all need to encourage this practice and make sure that we can protect ourselves by requiring every State to change their laws to provide an opportunity for law biding citizens to protect themselves and others. This is a step in the right direction towards creating an environment of Individual Responsibility for ourselves first and then the protection of our neighbors.

Law enforcement and other officials have taught the public for last 40 years; “Don’t get involved, let the professionals handle it”. While these instructions were given with the best of intentions, this is obviously a failed approach when dealing with this type of situation and so we must re-train America’s citizens to ACT on their own to protect themselves, thus protecting others. While I greatly respect and am Thankful for law enforcement officers, paramedics, firemen and other public servants, we all must realize that to wait in a situation like this, is to risk losing your life and the lives of many others. So the time to prepare yourself is NOW. You must decide what you are going to do before it ever happens and hopefully it never will. How you train is how you will likely react.

I feel so strongly about this that I am going to give away a video that we produced in

Israel titled “The Israeli Instinctive Combat Shooting Method”. This is a step-by-step course that can provide you with handgun self-defense shooting skills. But more importantly you will see some of the mindset required to stop, focus, attack and fight for your life and the lives of others.
